Passive House is an energy efficiency building standard which is achieved by creating an airtight, highly insulated home with a heat-recovery ventilation (HRV) system and other energy saving methods, which use upwards of 80% less energy for heating and air conditioning than average homes built to code. The slightly higher price of a Passive House is offset by these energy savings.
Using mechanical, filtered ventilation, building with less toxic materials, and less risk of mold from an effective moisture barrier can greatly improve air quality. Additional green building techniques such as installing solar panels, solar water heating, using locally sourced and manufactured materials also save energy and make a smaller overall carbon footprint.
